Pioneers Win So Pac West Conference

Santa Maria, CA (April 28, 2012) The Pioneers defeated the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs Saturday night 10-8. With the win, the Pioneers won their first Southern Pacific West Conference title and will head to the Southern Pacific Regional in Henderson Nevada.

“It was a battle tonight,” said Head Coach, Bryan Moses. “We just persevered. We played as a team, we never gave up, and continued to string good at-bats together at the dish.”

The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the first, but the Pioneers tied the game in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the third inning, the Mustangs took a 4-2 lead and kept that lead through two innings. In the top of the seventh inning, the Pioneers took a 6-4 lead, only to give up three runs in the bottom half. Down by one run, 8-7, in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers scored three and took a two run lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Ayrton Costa took the mound for the Pioneers and recorded his first save of the year.

The Pioneers will take on Cal Poly in a doubleheader tomorrow at Elks Field in Santa Maria. First pitch will take place at 11:00AM. For more information on the baseball program at UAV, contact Head Coach Bryan Moses at bryan.moses@uav.edu.
