LANCASTER, CA (April 3, 2012) After three consecutive weekends of cancelled games due to inclement weather, the University of Antelope Valley baseball team took on the Lancaster Jethawks at Clear Channel Stadium. The Pioneers, 13-4, faced a professional baseball team loaded with some of Major League Baseball's top prospects.

The Pioneers pitching continued to be a focal point of their season as they held the Jethawks to only four earned runs and scattered seven hits throughout seven innings. Joey Carrillo entered the game in relief and didn’t give up an earned run. He only allowed one hit in two innings of work. In the seventh inning, Andrew Woods entered the game in relief and posted a zero while only giving up one hit.

A textbook squeeze in the top of the fifth inning lead to the Pioneers’ first run of the game. Cameron Summers lead off the inning with a double to the left center gap and eventually advanced to third on a single to right by Devin Finson. With one out, and Summers moving down the line on the pitch, Ryan Lynch executed a perfect bunt, which allowed Summers to score with ease.

Down by four in the top of the eighth inning, the Pioneers continued battling. To lead off the inning, Brandon Robinson drew a pinch-hit walk. With one out and Robinson on first, Finson came through again with his second hit of the night, which advanced Robinson to third. Two pitches later, Robinson scored as Finson got into a rundown between first and second. Robinson’s run put the Pioneers within three of the Jethawks.

With an already impressive inaugural season, the University of Antelope Valley baseball team has another thing to be pleased with; pitching and hitting that competed with some of the best players in the country. “I think losing by three runs proves our players are confident going up against anybody. I also feel like the way we played is proof that our team and our school are poised to do great things going into the future,” said Head Baseball Coach, Bryan Moses. “The coaching staff is very proud.”
